Compulsory tests are presented as questions with multiple choices of 80 items for which only one answer is correct. These items deal with oral comprehension, use of grammatical syntax and written comprehension. Questions are designed on a principle of progressive difficulty. The correction is made by a scanner. The TCF also offers two additional tests, evaluating oral and written expression.

The test puts candidates on a ladder of six levels, going from "elementary" to "advanced superior".

These levels are designed by the European Council in the "common European reference frame" and by the ALTE group (Association of Language Evaluating Centers in Europe).

Maison Descartes is an approved center in the Netherlands for the organisation of this test.
The TCF is a registered trademark by the International Centre of Education Studies.
