Since its inauguration in 1933 by the French mediaevalist Gustave Cohen, Maison Descartes has been synonymous with literary events and academic interchange. A place where books are celebrated from every standpoint, and, given a chance, a catalyst from their inception to their publication, not excluding, of course, translation on the way.

It is in keeping with this tradition that we have decided to establish a French book centre. The centre has been allocated with new funds, and the literary critic and specialist in Francophone literature Margot Dijkgraaf as its director. The aim of this centre is to organise thematic events that develop and consolidate the various cultural vehicles at our disposal: conferences and symposiums and the library, obviously, but also other cultural events, exhibitions, contributions to publications ("Programme du Perron"), translation workshops and literature courses.

The French literary centre is a permanent organ for promoting discourse and exchange between French and Dutch publishers, as well as beyond the Francophone and Dutch-speaking spheres.
