What Is Garcinia Cambogia
What is Garcinia Cambogia?
Garcinia Cambogia is a name known to almost everyone nowadays; however, contrary to an opinion that I recently heard, it's not the name of an Italian opera singer :-). Many people don't even know what it is, or where it comes from? So, firstly, maybe we should look at just what Garcinia Cambogia actually is.
It is, in fact, just a fruit! Okay, it's a super fruit that's native to the Kerala region of south west India, and diverse other places throughout South East Asia. It's also sometimes known by other regional names, such as Garcinia Gummi-Gutta, Malabar Tamarind and the Brindleberry, to name but a few.
Fresh Garcinia Cambogia Fruit
This super fruit varies in size, from about the size of an orange to that of a small pumpkin; and, it has long been valued for its use when preparing the exquisite sour sauces that are prized in much of Indian and Oriental cuisine. Interestingly, it is also used in Indian 'Ayurvedic Medicine' to stimulate and balance digestion. Garcinia Cambogia isn't a drug it is a naturally occurring fruit, and it is the extracts and the rind of this fruit, that are used extensively as a weight loss aid, by people who wish to lose weight, and in the preparation of many traditional Ayurvedic remedies. Paradoxically, it's even used in some speciality Indian curry recipes.
Garcinia Cambogia and Weight Loss
In recent years, Garcinia Cambogia has gained massive popularity as a 'weight loss supplement'. Hundreds of thousands of people are using it, and are testifying to its effectiveness in helping them to lose weight. The scientific 'back-up' for the efficacy of Garcinia Cambogia is also pretty impressive, and it seems to make a compelling, and very convincing, case for its use by people who wish to lose weight.
Dr Oz and Garcinia Cambogia
In recent times there has been a tremendous upsurge in interest public about Garcinia Cambogia. There have been, hundreds and hundreds of thousands of men and women who swear by it, saying that, in their opinion, it has been the "Holy Grail" of weigh loss supplements. There has even been wide television exposure in the USA with Dr Mehmet Oz featuring it on his TV show. Whilst Dr Oz praised Garcinia, saying that it is definitely THE most effective aid for people who wish to lose weight, he does not sell, or endorse, any particular brand of Garcinia Cambogia himself.
The 'Active Ingredient' in Garcinia Cambogia is a substance called Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA), which has been successfully used, previously, in the treatment of obesity. In early 2002, clinical trials were carried out by eminent Japanese doctors and scientists, from several highly prestigious university medical schools; including the Toho University School of medicine, in Tokyo: and, the dep't of biochemistry of the Teikyo University School of medicine, also in Japan: and, they do make very interesting reading.
The studies were conducted, over a total period of sixteen weeks, on forty four subjects, both male and female, who were aged between 20 and 65 years. The objective was to study the effects of the administration of Garcinia Cambogia extract in an attempt to reduce their visceral fat (Belly Fat). The test was a 'double blind', that is, 'placebo controlled', and the subjects were split into two groups.
